History
Music in the Moonlight was first held in 1980 as Mater Dei Primary School's signature fundraising event. The original Music in the Moonlight format was an elegant affair held on the grounds of one of Ashgrove's earliest residences and the former Marist Father's Monastery, Glenlyon House.
As Music in the Moonlight grew in popularity, the event moved to a bigger outdoor venue – Dorrington Park – and has evolved into a large themed outdoor party. In 2009, Music in the Moonlight moved to the school grounds of Mater Dei primary school.
Every year, the event kicks off with a grand entrance of costumes.
Named in honour of founding Moonlight committee members, winning costumes are awarded the Pauline Selwood Trophy for Most Elegant Theme, the Tharon Gaffney Trophy for Best Entrance and the Julie Whitehouse Trophy for the Best Theme, and a recently introduced "People’s Choice Award".
